Biopuncture with Barbara Kura, FNP

What is Biopuncture?
Biopuncture is a therapy whereby specific locations are injected with low dilutions of natural substances that are mainly derived from plants and minerals. The goal is to support bioregulation and restore autoregulation. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process to treat conditions such as sports injuries, tendinitis, and variety of musculoskeletal pain.

What kind of products are injected?
The most common products are:
  • Lymphomyosot (detoxification, lymphatic drainage, swelling)
  • Traumeel (muscular pain, joint pain, sports injuries, bruising)
  • Zeel (arthritic pain and joint stiffness)
  • Spascupreel (muscle spasm, cramps, spasmodic cough)
  • Neuralgo-Rhem (neuralgia—nerve pain)
  • In addition, Lidocaine 0.2% can be added to make the injections less painful and dextrose 10% to stimulate growth factors. The biopuncturist typically prepares a combination specifically based on the functional diagnosis and response of the patient.
Are these products safe?
Since the ampoules contain very low concentrations (micro-doses) of the active substances, side effects are extremely rare. They are manufactured by companies that guarantee their production quality and are FDA approved.

Where are these injections given?
Most injections are given just under the skin with very small needles, as well as, a small volume making them less uncomfortable. Sometimes injections are given into the muscles, ligaments or over zones that correspond with overlying organs. Most people are surprised how easily and quickly these injections are given.

How many sessions are necessary?
Because this approach is stimulating natural healing, it usually takes time, with an average of 3-5 sessions done once a week. However, if the problem being treated is chronic, it may take up to 10 sessions. Since there are often layers of healing needed, the biopuncturist is continually re-evaluating and adjusting the treatment plan to promote optimal healing.

Can symptoms worsen after my first treatment?
Sometimes you may quickly improve after the initial injection. If the condition is chronic, you may experience a brief worsening of symptoms, which is considered the “reaction phase” of the healing process. This does not usually last longer than few days.

When should I consider Biopuncture?
Most common treatments include orthopedic problems such as sports injuries (sprains, strains), neck, back or joint pain. Other treatment plans include sciatica, tennis elbow, golfers elbow, and other tendinitis. Biopuncture can be effective in treating pain related to osteoarthritis and overuse injuries.  Biopuncture can also be successfully used in place of steroid injections, which can hinder healing and weaken the surrounding tissues.

Complaints related to rheumatic disease, Fibromyalgia, cancer pain and serious infectious disease do not respond well to biopuncture.
